Indonesia has officially launched its long-awaited Golden Visa program, with the first visa now granted. This policy aims to facilitate foreign investment and residency in popular areas, including Bali.

The Golden Visa, announced in late 2023 by Indonesia’s Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, is designed for investors, high-net-worth individuals, and entrepreneurs who want to live and work in Indonesia for 5-10 years. President Joko Widodo awarded the first visa to Shin Tae-Yong, the South Korean coach of Indonesia’s national football team, during a ceremony in Jakarta on July 25th.

President Widodo emphasized the importance of attracting global talent to benefit Indonesia, noting the selectivity required to ensure only high-quality applicants who contribute positively to the country are granted visas. He highlighted that the program aims to provide national benefits without compromising security.

The new visa program has seen substantial interest, with 300 applications already submitted. President Widodo officially launched the Golden Visa, inviting global citizens to invest and work in Indonesia.

Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly expressed optimism about the policy’s impact on business and investment, stating that it offers comfort and certainty for investors. The Golden Visa is available to high-net-worth investors and those deemed ‘Global Talent’ by the Indonesian government, who can apply by invitation or through government collaboration.

The Directorate General of Immigration highlighted that the Golden Visa aims to boost economic growth, diversify investment, and enhance opportunities for entrepreneurs and global talent in Indonesia. The program is inclusive, extending benefits to the Indonesian diaspora, property owners, the elderly, world talents, and company representatives establishing branches in Indonesia.

Various application routes exist for the Golden Visa, including individual or corporate investment, and purchasing government bonds or company stocks. Individual investors must invest USD 2.5 million for a five-year visa or USD 5 million for a ten-year visa. Corporate investors must invest USD 25 million, granting a five-year visa for directors and commissioners.
