The Bulukumba Regency in South Sulawesi is home to a traditional Bugis ship known as the Pinisi ship. In fact, the Bugis are renowned for their prowess at navigating large waters. The Type of Pinisi Boat

A phinisi sailboat has seven to eight sails on two masts that are arranged in a way that is similar to that of a small schooner. This type of ship is called a schooner because all of its sails are front-back sails that are lined up along the centerline of the hull on two masts. It is also known as a keci because the mast at the stern is slightly shorter than the mast at the bow.

Instead, the sails were rolled like a curtain towards the direction of the mast, opening the gap and allowing a deck crane to be deployed in the harbour.   • Palari

The Palari is a smaller version of the Lamba type of phinisi hull and has a curved keel. Usually controlled by the stern’s two-side control surfaces. Although the majority of phinisi boats are powered by a lambo-type hull. The engined form is also provided with a rudder behind the propeller.

  • Lambo

This hull is used by the contemporary Pinisi (PLM—Motor Sailing Boat), which is still in existence today. This hull only has one centre rudder, but some have two side rudders for aesthetic or functional reasons.
